The Repeat Leaving Certificate Course is designed for students wishing to maximise their points in preparation for progression to third level education. It is also suitable for mature students returning to education. This is a revision course and students will be required to do a great deal of learning outside of class time. In some cases it may be recommended that students take two years on the course before they sit their exams.
How to Join the one year Repeat Leaving Certificate Programme
- You must have already sat your Leaving Certificate
Or
- You are a mature student over 23 years of age.
Applications are invited from motivated and focused students who wish to repeat their Leaving Certificate to maximize their points. Students, who wish to enrol on the Institute of Further Education Repeat Leaving Certificate course, should complete the Repeat Leaving Certificate application form. Completed application forms should be sent to:

Thereafter the student and their Parent / Guardians will be invited to an interview with the course co-ordinator. The student's objectives, motivation and examination results to date will be discussed at the interview.
Places are offered subsequent to a successful interview with the course co-ordinator.

How to Join the two year Repeat Leaving Certificate Programme
Students seeking admission to the two year Leaving Certificate Programme should:
- be over 18 years of age
- have achieved a minimum of 4 Grade Cs at honours level (or higher) in the Junior Certificate Examination. (Mock results will be accepted if the student is sitting the Junior Certificate in the year of enrolment).
- have satisfactory academic report and reference from the school the student is currently attending.
Or
- You are a mature student over 23 years of age.
The Fifth Year course at the Institute of Further Education has been established due to the overwhelming demand by parents for a place for their son / daughter. Students who are not eligible for our one year Repeat Leaving Certificate may pursue the first year of the two year programme. Students may only progress to the second year of this programme when they have satisfactorily completed their first year.
How to Join the two year Repeat Leaving Certificate Programme
Applications to the two year Leaving Certificate Programme are invited from highly motivated students who are willing to work on their own initiative. They will be required to meet our entrance criteria and should have a mature attitude and have completed their Junior Certificate or are over 23 years of age. All applicants for the two year Leaving Certificate are subject to completing a successful interview.
Students are requested to complete the Repeat Leaving Certificate application form and return to Carlow Institute of Further Education before the closing date.

There are frequent assessments of subjects, daily and monthly monitoring of attendance and the availability of career guidance. Students attend a subject options meeting in early September and a study skills seminar is held in mid-September. A Parent/Teacher meeting is organised in November to allow parents to discuss student’s progress and motivation.

Examination Fees: €350 (Approx)
(Includes registration for the Repeat Leaving Certificate and Examination Fee).
Garda Vetting
Garda Vetting is a requirement on courses / programmes where students / learners have access to children or vulnerable adults. Prior to attending work experience students / learners must be vetted by the Gardai. Students / learners on relevant course/programmes will be issued with Garda Vetting forms by post prior to interviews.
Students / learners who have lived outside the jurisdiction of Ireland / Northern Ireland and for whom Garda Vetting is unavailable are required to provide vetting from the relevant police authorities.
